The Filthy Cup

*NOTE: All scripture passages from “The Scriptures 2009” unless otherwise noted.

Messiah taught us to cleanse the inside of the cup and the whole thing would be clean. A cup that is cleansed is not one that appears clean on the outside, because while it is dirty on the inside nobody would drink from it. However, even if it is dirty on the outside, if it is clean on the inside it would be safe to drink from.

Blind guides – straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel! Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are filled with plunder and unrighteousness. Blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and dish, so that the outside of them becomes clean too. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you are like whitewashed tombs which outwardly indeed look well, but inside are filled with dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. So you too outwardly indeed appear righteous to men, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and lawlessness.
Matthew 23:24-28

Messiah likened those who were clean on the outside to whited walls. He mentioned also that they strain at a gnat and swallow a camel. While they nit pick about what they see as faults in others, they allow so many evils in their own life and what they do is okay. They have many ways to justify their own faults, yet point the finger and cast false accusation against others.

In the time of Messiah the tombs with dead bodies in them were scrubbed clean on the outside, while the tombs that were clean on the inside and did not have dead bodies were not clean on the outside. The tombs that were clean on the inside were used for a place where out of town visitors could sleep at night. There were no motels or hotels in those days and so the empty tombs were used as a dwelling. People are much like those tombs and Messiah likened people to them.

We see people still today who are busy reading their Bible, spend a lot of time on Sabbath in the word, yet they remain full of inner turmoil. They point the finger at others quickly, many times even casting false accusation while their own inner turmoil is still not resolved. They are quick to tell other people what is wrong with them, even if what they see as a problem isn’t actually a problem, mostly because their eye is filled with evil. Yet they cannot receive instruction instead and a huge beam remains in their eye. A critical spirit deceives these people and they do not have the Ruach (Hebrew for Holy Spirit). They are mockers and do not have the Father’s love. They typically are filled with ego, and even a super ego and don’t even know their own arrogance.

But you, beloved ones, remember the words spoken before by the emissaries of our Master יהושע Messiah, because they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own wicked lusts. These are the ones who cause divisions, not having the Spirit.
Jude 1:17-19

Those who have cleansed the inside of the cup have come to understand life and people better. They do see the wrong in life, they see more clearly however and they are not naive to when they see sin in other people’s lives. Yet, they don’t go about beating people up verbally about these things, instead they understand love and have come to embrace the Father’s love. Because they seek love, they don’t go to people pointing the finger and judging them.

He who covers a transgression seeks love, But he who repeats a matter separates intimate friends.
Proverbs 17:9

The cup that is cleansed on the inside has no guile in their heart and does not go about pointing the finger, mocking and bringing division. They hold their tongue in order to keep peace many times, which is read wrong by those with a critical spirit. Little do other people realize the great lengths people with the Father’s love go to in order to keep peace. But only those who know the way of peace get this. They know that suffering wrong themselves is to walk in righteousness. We do not defend ourselves, we do not life ourselves up. We suffer hurt in the interest of not attacking or hurting others.

Already, then, there is a failure with you, that you have lawsuits among you. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated? But you yourselves do wrong and cheat, and that to your brothers! Do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the reign of Elohim? Do not be deceived. Neither those who whore, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor greedy of gain, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers shall inherit the reign of Elohim.
1 Corinthians 6:7-10

Those who are quick to defend themselves and speak quickly have not removed the beam from their eye. They find many ways to justify themselves, and yet they remain whited walls. They are not at all humble even though in their mind they think they are righteous. As a pastor I know once said, those who are deceived, don’t know they are deceived.

Those who have cleansed the inside of the cup, walk in true humility and have crucified the flesh. The inside of the cup cannot be cleansed until we have removed the beam from our eye and crucified our flesh. Until this happens we can’t even begin to love and experience the Father’s love in our life. Because until we stop defending ourselves and attacking others and casting false accusation, we will never experience the real cleansing that Messiah brings.
